A new psychological approach to working with families of aggressive, violent and self-destructive children and young people
by Dr Peter Jacob
Wednesday 11th February 2009 from 8.00 to 10.00 pm
Aggressive children and young people present not only their families but also professionals in CAMHS, Education and Social Services with serious challenges. Non Violent Resistance (NVR) is a new psychological approach that addresses this issue. It uses methods drawn from the socio-political movements led by Mahatma Ghandi and Martin Luther King for work within families and schools. Unlike behavioural therapies, this systemic way of working focuses on the transformation of relationships between adults and children who have acted in aggressive ways. It aims towards a de-escalation of aggression and the creation of a co-operative network which bridges family, school and other areas of a child and young person’s life. This intervention can bring about a rapid change to problems that have seemed intractable.
Dr Peter Jakob is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Family Therapist with over 25 years of experience in working with problems relating to trauma, violence, abuse and multiple difficulties in families.
This talk will be relevant to all professionals working with aggressive and violent children and young people.
