The aim of this conference is to help foster carers, adoptive parents, guardians, care workers, health care workers, teachers and other professionals to best understand and manage the often very complex children that are placed into care.
Generally these are children who have experienced serious trauma in their early relationships, as well as the impact of profound uncertainty and multiple losses in their lives. As a result their behaviour can often be very puzzling and the children can present many challenges to those caring for them.
The children’s presentation often raises many questions in terms of understanding the meaning of their behaviour and how best to help them to overcome difficulties, form new and more secure attachments and develop a positive sense of themselves. Their mental health is often called into question. Autism, ADHD and Attachment disorder are diagnostic labels that are frequently used to describe and/or explain the often complex presentations. This of itself can lead to a confusing and conflictual diagnostic picture and management plan.
This conference draws together an international group of experts in the field. Its aim is to provide a space to think about the complex behaviour of Looked after Children from different perspectives and to better understand the profound impact the children’s presentation can have upon those charged with their care, education and treatment.
