Foster children are not always good with words and expressing their feelings verbally. Through recognizing and ‘reading’ the nonverbal language of movement, it is possible to gain a new perspective on a child’s communication. The aim of the workshop will be to explore, through guided movement improvisation, how the body (not only the voice) can speak. Bodies sometimes express what can’t easily be put into words.
Participants will explore how to listen and respond to the nonverbal language of movement, in an effort to promote dialogue and understanding. Participants will also reflect on the emotional impact and meaning of movement patterns – patterns which may be expressed in posture, gesture, use of space and the dynamics of movement.
Katya Bloom, PhD, is a movement psychotherapist and author of The Embodied Self: movement and psychoanalysis (Karnac Books 2006). She has taught movement in a variety of settings in the USA and UK, including the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art since 1989.
