An exploration of the conscious and unconscious processess at work in managing risk. Some emerging ideas based on case studies from different sectors.
In the past year we have witnessed failures in decision making with dramatic consequences in organisations as diverse as financial services and corporate business, health and social care. Risk can not be said to have been managed well either for the protection of vulnerable people or the greater good. In this lecture Judith will explore some of the factors that lead to faulty decision making when risk is high and the consequences may be devastating. She will look at the contribution from the organisations, the political context and individual behaviour in response to organisational and societal demands. And looking at material from her consultancy and coaching practice she will draw some parallels between anxieties, behaviour and organisational defences in different work settings and link some ideas from social psychology with the notion of the perverse organisation (as described by Susan Long).
Judith is Director of the Tavistock Consultancy Service, a small not-for-profit organisation that delivers a range of consultancy services as part of the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust. Judith works as an executive coach, psychologist and organisational consultant and her coaching practice includes clients from a diverse range of corporate, public and independent sector organisations and has grown through client recommendation. She has developed and directed the TCS programme of training in Executive Coaching, which received the Quality Award of the European Mentoring and Coaching Council. Judith is an experienced consultant and facilitator to groups and teams and a teacher and trainer. She is co-director of the Tavistock Professional Doctorate programme in Consulting to Organisations. This programme facilitates new and innovative research into consultancy, management, coaching, team development and relationships at work.
