Susan Fleisher is the Executive Director of the National Organisation for Foetal Alcohol Syndrome-UK. Susan is also an adoptive mother of a child with Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).
At this talk Susan will present a short film and examine the impact of FASD and how to best manage and be more aware of the repercussions of this diagnosis.
Many people are unaware that drinking alcohol when pregnant can cause permanent brain damage in their baby. Less people know what the symptoms of alcohol related birth defects are and even less know how to help those affected. Under reporting and under diagnosing means affected people do not get the help and support they need for their mental health and well-being.
Children with FASD cannot outgrow their disabilities. FASD's are a spectrum of diabilities and physical and mental disorders caused by alcohol exposure during pregnancy. International studies state that one in one hundred babies are being born with FASD (1% of or children). With the increase in binge drinking the numbers are certain to rise.
This presentation should be relevant to all professionals working with children, adolescents or adults, whether you are working with children or families affected by FASD or working with vulnerable groups of people who are using alcohol.
