Interpreting body-movement when working with children: a practical workshop
Saturday morning workshop - 26th Nov 9.45 -12noon by Rachel Melville-Thomas
Therapists, teachers and careworkers are often obliged to absorb the non-verbal communication of the child or adolescent client, and then to try to understand and translate it into thought and verbal language. Movements and gestures are described in various ways depending on the perception of the professional.
But what exactly are we seeing in the body movement we are observing? Does it always have a symbolic, individual meaning? Or are there broader guidelines to help us know what is going on?
This session presents movement observation and analysis methods and theory borrowed from the fields of dance, and from movement therapy which offer more systematic ways to understand both client non-verbal states and actions, and also the bodily counter transference sensations in the adult trying to help.
